VenaSeal™ Vein Closure
A gentle, heat-free treatment that seals diseased veins with a small amount of medical adhesive — no tumescent anesthesia, and usually no compression stockings.
What Is VenaSeal?
VenaSeal™ is a non-thermal closure system for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Instead of heat, it seals the refluxing saphenous vein with tiny amounts of medical-grade cyanoacrylate adhesive — a specially formulated medical glue.
A thin catheter is guided into the diseased vein under ultrasound. Small drops of adhesive bond the vein walls together as gentle pressure is applied from outside. Blood reroutes through healthy veins, and the sealed vein is gradually incorporated by the body.
Because there is no heat, there is no need for tumescent anesthesia — the series of numbing injections required for RFA and EVLA. Just one small numbing injection where the catheter enters.
Who It's For — and Who It's Not For
VenaSeal appeals to patients who want the gentlest experience possible:
- Those who prefer to avoid multiple anesthesia injections along the leg.
- Those who cannot — or would rather not — wear compression stockings afterward.
- Those with veins near the skin or nerves, where avoiding heat is an advantage.
- Busy patients who want the fastest possible return to normal activity.
It is generally not the right option for patients with a known sensitivity to cyanoacrylate adhesives, active vein inflammation or infection, or an active deep vein clot. One honest caveat: insurance coverage for VenaSeal varies by plan more than coverage for thermal ablation. Some insurers cover it readily; others apply stricter criteria. We verify your exact benefits before treatment — costs made clear up front.
What to Expect
Before
Your consultation includes a duplex ultrasound performed personally by Dr. Tadepalli to confirm reflux and map your veins. If VenaSeal is a good match, insurance is verified and pre-authorization handled before scheduling. No referral needed.
During
The procedure is done in our Sparta office with you awake and comfortable. After one small numbing injection, the catheter enters through a needle-sized opening. Dr. Tadepalli delivers precise amounts of adhesive along the vein under continuous ultrasound guidance, pressing gently as each segment seals. Most patients feel little more than light pressure.
After
A small bandage covers the entry point — that's typically it. No tumescent soreness, and usually no stockings. You walk out the same day. Walk in. Walk out.
Recovery
VenaSeal has one of the gentlest recoveries in vein care. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or the next. We still encourage regular walking and easing back into strenuous exercise over the first few days.
Mild tenderness along the treated vein can occur and usually resolves on its own. A follow-up ultrasound confirms the vein has sealed.
Risks & Considerations
VenaSeal is well tolerated, but every procedure has risks and results vary. The most notable procedure-specific risk is a hypersensitivity or inflammatory reaction to the adhesive — a phlebitis-like reaction of redness, itching, or tenderness along the vein that usually settles with conservative care, though it can occasionally persist. Other possible effects include bruising, tenderness, and rarely deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or adhesive extension toward the deep system, which careful ultrasound technique is designed to prevent. The adhesive remains permanently in the sealed vein — most patients never notice it, but it is worth understanding before choosing.
If VenaSeal isn't the best match for your anatomy, allergy history, or insurance plan, alternatives include RFA, EVLA, Varithena®, and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy — all offered in the same office.
"For the right patient, VenaSeal is remarkably kind — one needle stick, no tumescent injections, usually no stockings. My job is to make sure you're the right patient before we choose it."— Dr. Satish Tadepalli, MD, MPH, DABVLM
